Pouring Paint How-To

Pouring paint is so mesmerizing! I had to try it! If you’re ever in need of being in a serene moment or just want to daydream, this is a must-try. I saw it on youtube. It took a while to get the right technique down, but of course, it worked out. The whole idea is to mix the medium and paint to a consistency where it flows nicely.

Items Needed

• pouring paint or liquid acrylic paint
• pouring medium (main ingredient)
• paint pouring canvas
• plastic cups
• small paint brush
• small sink strainer (see photo)

Steps for Pouring Paint

Step 1: Use some type of covering to protect the surface when pouring paint.

Step 2: Mix your paint with the paint medium. The medium makes it flow. Without it, it doesn’t flow nicely. You should use about a 5:1 mix ratio. (Using mostly medium and very little paint.)  Paint Used: Artist’s Loft Pouring Paint or Color Pour Pouring Paint.  Medium Used: Artist’s Loft Pouring Medium.

Step 3: Use plastic cups or any other item to hold the canvas board.

Step 4: Use a small sink strainer with thin long slits to make the pattern in the video. Place a small object on the bottom of the strainer to lift it up a little off the board.  Possible items: clay, nut; from nuts & bolts tools, etc.

Step 5: Paint edges with a color of your choice. This is optional. It fills up any spaces that the paint doesn’t cover at the end of pouring. I used paint that was not mixed with medium to paint the edges.

Step 6: Pour colors separately into the bottom of the strainer. Allow a few seconds between each pour. 

Step 7: This is how it looked right after I finished pouring. It will continue to change as it continues to flow. I prefer the first pic right after pouring and wish that it would stay that way. Unfortunately, it’s paint pouring and it continues to flow until it’s done. However, the second one is nice also. I will hang it. It looks professional! It takes a couple of days for the paint to completely dry. 

Step 8: Optional: You can swirl colors or leave them alone. (This is a pic from the second paint pouring.)
