Making Homemade Jelly from Grape Juice

Homemade Jelly from Juice

On my last post, I made homemade peanut butter.  Well, you can’t have peanut butter without jelly. So, this week, I’m making homemade jelly.  I have one daughter who likes jelly sandwiches and one that likes peanut butter sandwiches.  The first time we made this jelly, it was for a homeschooling lesson with my youngest daughter.  I’ve made it a couple of times, now.  It’s pretty simple to make and it’s delicious!  It tastes just like regular jelly…which is very sweet.  I only make one jar when I make jelly, since we don’t eat an enormous amount of it.  Peanut butter is eaten so much faster in our house.  This is very simple to make.  This recipes makes about 2 pints. Just double or triple if you want to make more.

Ingredients:

Making Homemade Jelly with Grape Juice

  • 1  1/2 cups of grape juice (no added sugar)
  • 2 cups of sugar
  • 1 box of Sure Jell No Sugar Added Pectin (use only about 1/2 box)
  • jar to store

First, clean jars and then sterilize in boiling water for about 5 minutes.

Put lids in really hot water.  I heated water in a pot. Didn’t let it boil. Just heated until it was really hot and then set lids in the water until ready to use.

Now, you can begin making the jelly.

Pour juice into pot. Pour pectin into juice in pot.  I used a little over half of the box.  You have to play around with adding the right about of pectin when making jelly.  It will depend on how thick or should I say how stiff you want your jelly.  The pectin is what thickens it and helps it not to be runny.  One time I made a batch and it was a little too runny for me.

Bring to a boil.  Then, pour in sugar.  Stirring constantly until dissolved.  It doesn’t take long for it to dissolve.

Remove from heat.  You’ll notice a film over the jelly mixture.  Just take a spoon and remove it.

Pour hot jelly into jar.  Place lid on jar.

Then place in boiling water for 10 minutes.  Make sure that the water comes completely above the lid of the jar.  Make sure it’s submerged so that the entire container is underwater. Be careful when removing. I was able to use my tongues to remove from hot water.  Another great idea would be to use a measuring cup and remove cups of hot water when finished boiling until jar is fully exposed.  Then, you could use a towel to remove it.  Didn’t think of that until after I struggled with taking out with tongues.

You’ll know that it has sealed nicely when the circle in the center of the lid pops up.  My jar obviously didn’t take long to do that.  I was walking away and had only taken a couple of steps when I heard the center of the lid go….pop.  Store in dry place for 24 hours before opening if you’re going to use it right away.

  1. Do I have to use no sugar added pectin or can I just use the original pectin

  2. Thanks for sharing your thoughts about grape juice. Regards

  3. Yum! I usually buy All Fruit. Would this work with less sugar or no sugar at all? Or what would you sub?

  4. Never thought of making jelly from grape juice… but it makes perfect sense! My brother has grape vines in his yard, and when I visited them we made grape jelly, and this is pretty much the exact same process, except that we had to crush all the grapes first to turn them into juice. So by buying the juice, you’re just eliminating one step! Great idea!

  5. This sounds amazing. Homemade peanut butter and now homemade grape jelly. I’m all over it, Sharon 🙂

  6. Hi Sharon! Stopping in from Let’s Get Real today. I do so love seeing what you’ve been up to. I have a kid that likes just jelly sandwiches. I thought I was the only one. What kid doesn’t like pb & J? Apparently, my kid. Thanks for the canning tutorial as well. Very helpful!

    • You’re welcome Christina! Yep….definitely got a jelly sandwich lover in my house. Now, I’ve got to figure out what’s my next homemade project….

  11. I never considered homemade jelly before Sharon. I didn’t realize it was so simple to make. I would actually like to know where do you get your jars?

    • Hi April! This is really simple to make. I get my jars from a store called Kitchen & Company. Love that store. The prices are very reasonable and it’s such a fantastic place to shop.

  12. I have been making jelly like this for years….I also make apple jelly the same way, with 100% apple juice, no added sugar, the only thing I do different is I only use 1 1/2 cups of sugar, We like it not so sweet, but I am the big PB&J eater in our house, Our only daughter is grown with 2 daughters, so I make Grape jelly for one and Apple jelly for the other….she actually likes it when I mix the apple jelly right in with the PB using my kitchen aide mixer, I makes for an easy to make PB&J 🙂

    • Hi Amy! I simply must try making apple jelly now that you’ve mentioned it. I would love to make different types of jellies. Love the idea of mixing the jelly in with the peanut butter.

      • I was a school cafeteria ( lunch room lady) 🙂 for 35 years and that is a trick I learned on PB&J day..I mixed a number 10 can of apple Jelly with 8 lbs. of creamy PB in our big Kitchen Aide mixer in the kitchen…we used to make 2000 sandwiches and this cut the time in half…and it is really good, I keep some made up at home for when my grands are here…and I always take them a big jar when I go for a visit, You will LOVE the apple jelly just as much as the grape…I have always thought mine was better than the store, and I always make it with juice 🙂

        • You’ve convinced me! Next time I’m in the store, I’m picking up some apple juice and trying it out. Can’t wait to see what my kids think of it.

  13. You cant have peanut butter without jelly. Of course not. I love it.

  14. I would make this for my husband because he eats jelly and I’m sure he votes peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. 😀 I like peanut butter sandwiches.

  15. You make everything on your own. Love your blog! Would much rather do this than buy the store bought with all that junk it 🙁
