My Top Five Homemade Cleaning Products!

My Top Five Homemade Cleaning Products

Today, I’m cleaning the whole house. Just saying that made me tired.  Then, I thought about all the homemade cleaning products that I’ve made so far.  It made me realize that I’m on my way to having a guru of homemade products.   I’ve set stuff up in the kitchen to try out a homemade powdered laundry detergent.  However, before I work on that product for a new post, I thought I would list my top five homemade products that I’ve made so far.  Some were more popular than others.  My most popular one, especially, when it comes to pinning, is the Homemade Dishwasher Detergent Cubes.  Then, the Foam Hand Soap.  I like that one a lot, too.  Anyway, here they are.  Now, they’re compiled in a list for you.  All you have to do is pin, bookmark, and pull them out when you need them.  As a matter of fact, I need to make some more foam hand soap.  My container in the kitchen is empty.

Homemade Dishwasher Detergent Cubes

Homemade Dishwasher Detergent Cubes!

If you’re interested in making your own homemade dishwasher detergent cubes, then you’ll want to try out this one.  Since, I’ve made these, a lot of readers have also offered great advice on making them even better.  So, make sure that you read some of the updates on this post.  Plus, skim through some of the many comments that were made.  My readers were really great about commenting on different products they were using in their recipes.

Make Foam Hand Soap

How to Make and Refill Foam Hand Soap

Okay, this is definitely my favorite. Why? Well, it is so simple to make.  It only requires two products.  You can’t get any easier than that.  Plus, who doesn’t love foaming soap! It is so much fun to use when washing your hands.  That statement came straight from my kids.

Homemade Liquid Hand Soap!

Homemade Liquid Hand Soap

I liked this homemade product.  It cleans your hands just as well as the store-bought kind.  My kids didn’t like this one.  They wanted more suds when they washed their hands.  However, for me, clean is clean.  If you want clean and don’t require all the suds, then you’ll love this one.

Use Toothpaste to Whiten Clothes

Using Toothpaste to Whiten Your White Clothes

My kids thought I was crazy for creating this concoction. Trust me when I say this turned out fabulous!  You don’t use this to whiten a whole load of clothes.  You use this when you need to brighten a favorite shirt or piece of clothing that has that dingy look to it and you’ve tried everything to get it back to a bright white.  This toothpaste concoction works like a miracle!  I was able to wear my favorite white shirt this year.  It had been sitting in the closet for a couple of years. I refused to throw it away.  Came up with this little miracle and now it’s back into the wardrobe lineup. Yay!

Homemade Dryer Sheets

Homemade Dryer Sheets

This is one that I’m still testing.  The only problem that I’m having with testing this one is making the kids throw them into the dryer.  They look at them as towels and not as dryer sheets.  So, they tend to just overlook the homemade dryer sheets.  They’re only getting used when I do the laundry.  Since, I have kids old enough to do laundry, I’m usually not the one doing laundry. (Okay, I need to stop right there and do a little dance!) So, I’ll just keep reminding them to use them. Though, I think they’re a neat idea.

Now, what am I missing? Oh yeah, homemade powdered laundry detergent. I’m on it today. Of course, I’m going to put a little spin on mind.  From researching, I know most people use three basic ingredients.  I’ve got something else in mind…..

What are some of your favorite homemade cleaning products?

  1. It’s inspiring. I think I have to try to make it in my house. Awesome.

  2. Another awesome post you have here. It will be very useful for my knowledge as a owner of washing machine site. Vielen dank!

  3. I haven’t tried making many of my own cleaning products but my mom does and loves it. I will definitely be passing this along to her.
Thanks for sharing at the Pinworthy Projects Party!

  4. I just use vinegar as a softener in my washer. I put it right in where the softner would go. Or you could put it into one of those softner balls. I normally only use 1/2 cup per load. Yes the scent does go away. Another thing I use in my dryer to soften clothes and for static cling is alum. foil. Take about 3 pcs. about 12 inches long and squish them all into one ball. Just throw it into the dryer and leave it in there.

    • Hi Margret! Guess what? I read your comment earlier today and guess what I’m using in the dryer right now. Yep, I’m trying out your advice on aluminum foil. My kids looked at me like I was crazy when I told them. Of course, I’m always trying things out of the norm. Thanks for the tip!

  5. You have certainly come up with some great ideas for cleaning products Sharon. So many of the ones I buy affect my skin. I am particularly fascinated about using toothpaste to whiten white clothes. Congratulations on being featured on The Gathering Spot. Have a wonderful week.

  6. I really like your homemade cleaning ideas. The dishwasher tabs look really interesting! Have you tried homemade laundry detergent? Our family really likes this recipe:

    Ingredients
    1 Cup of Washing Soda
    1 Cup of Borax
1 Bar of Castile Soap, grated

    Instructions
Combine all ingredients and store in an airtight container (non-metal)
Use approximately 1 tablespoon per load of laundry.
    Tips:
Instead of grating the castile soap by hand, cut it into chunks and put it in a microwave safe bowl and heat in microwave for 30 second increments, watching closely. When it starts to “swell” and all the corners are rounded and melty looking, remove from microwave and let cool to room temperature. The texture changes and you can now just crumble it up. OR, throw it in your food processor!

    • Thank you! The dishwasher tabs have definitely been a popular post on my blog. I just made homemade powdered laundry detergent. I didn’t make the liquid kind. I thought the powdered might be a better idea in terms of keep. Trust me, I will definitely get around to trying the liquid version, though. Thanks for the recipe. It seems pretty simple to follow.

  7. Such awesome ideas on here! I have heard of some of the other ones but the dishwasher cubes are totally new to me. I will have to try those! I am always about saving money and having “cleaner” products. Thank you!

If you have time you should totally link this up at our Blog Strut! We would love to have you there!

  8. Such a cool post to all your great diy cleaning products. I need to get making! xo Theresa

  9. Oh my! What a wonderful post! I can’t wait to try the dishwasher tabs… those things are so stinkin’ expensive when they are store bought. And, the toothpaste trick – genius! Thanks so much for linking it up today at Tips & Tricks… I really enjoyed reading it! 🙂

  10. You are a God send! I have started the process of using natural cleaners so I will definitely be reviewing this post to start trying new things. I found a recipe for comet and all purpose cleaner so I started with that. I couldn’t get all of my ingredients in time which were essential lemon oil, borax, washing soda and dawn or castile soap. I only had the borax and Castile soap and this still cleaned mt bathroom extremely well. I just wrote a post about it. I look forward to trying more things and writing about them. If I get and ideas from you I will be sure to reference your post and link back to you! Thank you so much or sharing on Mommy Monday! xoxo

    • Thanks Brittnei! I haven’t tried a homemade all-purpose cleaner yet. When it comes to homemade, sometimes it’s trial and error. You can get buy without some products and it still comes out nicely.

  11. thanks for these all tips,I specially like the hand soap and whitening with toothpaste method…Going to pin it!

  12. I do the DIY foaming hand soap, too! Love it! Now you just have to try my makeup remover pads 🙂 Thanks for stopping by!

  13. I haven’t tried any homemade cleaning products, but it is something I want to do 🙂

    • You must definitely try them out one day. You might actually decide to not go back to store-bought on some of the products. I, especially, love the foam hand soap. It’s so easy to make. (I actually let my 11 year old make it for the house.) Plus, it’s definitely a money-saver.

  14. Sharing this one around I have a few friends like me who have been trying to reduce the chemicals on their homes. Fantastic

  15. These are great tips! I had no idea you could whiten your whites with toothpaste.

  16. This post is a keeper. I recently found a recipe for homemade floor cleaner made with products I already have around the house – vinegar, dawn dish soap and baking soda. I am going to try it when I run out of my store bought cleaner.
