Make Your Own Towel Wrap

Make Your Own Towel Wrap

Took a little time out of my day to make a towel wrap for my daughter.  I made her one because she seems to stay in her towel forever after she takes a shower.  Plus, towel wraps can be so cute if you make your own.  You can pick the color you really like and decorate it with the ribbons of your choice.  It requires some sewing but not too much.

Items Needed:

  • large bath towel
  • ribbon
  • thread
  • elastic tape
  • velcro

Directions:

Measure the towel around the person who will wear it.  Cut off towel to desired size if needed.

Fold and sew down cut edge to secure the end if you cut off a portion of the towel.  If you did not, then skip this step.

On short end, place ribbon if using and sew down securely on towel.

I also added a long piece of ribbon on the longer edge of the towel.

Before folding down top part of towel which will become elastic, I measured the width of the elastic. It measured 5/8 inches wide. You will want to measure the elastic to make sure that you fold down enough for the elastic to fit inside. Then, I folded down about 1  1/2 inches of the top part of the towel and pinned.

Next, sew down the folded area.  I sewed as close to the ribbed edge as possible.  Measure your elastic around the top body area (under the arms) of the person who will wear towel wrap.  You don’t have to pull it tight to measure the person.  Just measure elastic in a normal way.

Then, attach a large pin to the elastic.  You will use it to thread the elastic through the opening of the fold.  You have to push and scrunch the material to get the elastic to go all the way through.  Just a note: Make sure that you do not let the other end of the elastic slip through the fold.  As soon as it gets close to the end, pin the elastic to the end of the fold so that you don’t have to again thread it through. See pic below.  I was busing threading my elastic through and noticed that the other end slipped in the fold.

When the end of the elastic, without the pin, gets this far through at the other end, you should pin it in place with a straight pin.  That way, it will not slip though.

Finally, made it to the end.  While you are pulling it through, you will notice that it will start to scrunch or gather at the top. That is perfectly normally.

On the right side of the towel wrap, sew the elastic down through the towel.  Sew down to the seam that made the fold.  I tried sewing close to the end and then about 6 inches down from the end.  If you can’t sew close to the end, you can sew about 3 inches from the end. Do other end also.  Want to keep that elastic secure inside of the towel.

Now, you will sew on the velcro.  On the wrong side of the towel, on the folded area that contains the elastic, place a 6 inch piece of velcro and sew down.  Then, on the right side of the towel, on the folded area that contains the elastic, place another 6 inch of velcro and sew down.  It may be a little difficult to sew down but if you go very slow with the sewing machine it will sew down.  If I couldn’t get it to go through in some areas, I used a needle and thread.
