I love Homemade Peanut Butter!

Homemade Peanut Butter!

Why do I love homemade peanut butter? I love it because it’s homemade and there’s no sodium/salt in it.  High blood pressure runs in my family.  So, I try to cook and eat most things that do not include a lot of sodium. Peanut butter is definitely a favorite food item in our house.  I’ve been making it homemade for quite awhile now.  Typically, a jar of peanut butter has about 140mg sodium per serving (about 2tbs).  I read lots of labels since I have high blood pressure and it definitely pays to read those labels. If I make my own peanut butter, it has 0mg of sodium.  Can’t beat that.  It’s simply the quickest thing that you can make.  Most of the time, my daughter will make it with me.

Ingredients:  This makes enough to fill about an 8oz container.

  • 1 1/2 cups of UNSALTED roasted  peanuts
  • 1 tbs vegetable oil (or oil of your choice)
  • 1 tbs sugar (optional)
  • 1 tbs honey (0ptional)

Directions:

Homemade Peanut Butter

Pour the peanuts into a food processor.  Use a blender if you don’t have a food processor.

Homemade Peanut Butter

Pour oil into the food processor with peanuts.  Vegetable oil works best for me. I’ve tried using olive oil also, but prefer vegetable oil.

Homemade Peanut Butter

Give it a spin until mixture becomes blended and creamy.

Before you have completely blended the peanuts and oil into a really creamy mixture, add in the sugar and honey if you would like to sweeten the peanut butter.  I added in 1 tbs of sugar and 1 tbs of honey.  If you want it sweeter, add in more.  Or leave it out completely if you don’t want to sweeten the peanut butter.

Homemade Peanut Butter

Your mixture will become really creamy and more liquid-like.

Homemade Peanut Butter

Pour into a container.  I’m using a 7oz jar.  Put lid on container and set in refrigerator overnight.  It will eventually become the texture of regular peanut butter.  Then, toast up some bread and spread on some of this yummy homemade peanut butter! Delicious!

Homemade Peanut Butter!

This photo gives you a look at how the texture thickens after it sets for awhile in the refrigerator. Also, store the homemade peanut butter in the refrigerator.  It should last for a couple of months in the refrigerator.  Since, I’m making a 7oz size, it will probably be finished off within 3 weeks.  I love eating peanut butter, so it definitely doesn’t go to waste in my house.

Now, of course, you can make peanut butter into different types of textures…crunchy, smooth, etc.  I love the creamy texture.  What’s your favorite type of peanut butterDo you make your own peanut butter?

  3. I just had to come back and drool over this some more. I have tons of cashews. wonder if this would work with cashews.

    • Hi Bintu! I have not tried this with cashews, but I love cashews. You should so make it with cashews. Then, if you like I will definitely try it. Let me know if you make and if it turns out good.

  4. Wow, how easy! Thanks for sharing at the Friday Follow Along. Make sure to stop by this week because you are featured!

  5. Hi Sharon,
How simple! I did not realize how easy it was to make peanut butter. My kids and I love it. This will come in handy in our home. Thank you for sharing it on the Thumping Thursdays Blog Hop. It will be featured on tomorrow’s blog hop. I look forward to seeing what else you have in store for us.

  6. Wow I had no idea peanut butter had so much sodium in it! Definitely good to know. My grandmother has issues with high blood pressure so I’m passing this along to her. Great post. Pinned it.

    • Hi Jessica! It is amazing how much sodium is in food products. That is why I try to make a lot of homemade products so I know exactly what’s in it. I hope your grandmother tries this. It tastes really good!

  7. Hi Sharon!
Great post! I also make my own as well. It is much more tastier than what you buy factory made. I like both smooth or crunchy though smooth is my favorite. Mine do not last quite as long as yours does. I am in it every day. I am not much of a meat eater so for me it is a good protein filler.
    Have a great week 🙂

    • Hi Bismah! I though this jar was going to last as long as 3 weeks, but for some reason it’s disappearing sooner than I thought. I think it’s because I have a part time job now and take two sandwiches with me for my lunch everyday. I’m already at the bottom of jar. This just means that I need to make a larger batch next time.

  8. This looks delicious and so easy. I’ve never made my own peanut butter but I might have to use your recipe to try. Thanks for sharing on the weekend re-Treat link party!

  9. Saying hi from SITS! Love this – so simple. I’m not sure why I don’t do this??? Thanks for reminding us how easy this is – we love peanut butter in our house, especially on bananas with some jam (which I do make myself!)

    Have a great weekend.

    • Hi Beth! It is definitely too simple for you not to try it. Give it a try. Now, I have not tried making jam, but I do make jelly and itching to try making preserves. So many things I want to try and make….

  10. Thanks so much for sharing this at the Pin-It Monday Hop! I just wanted to let you know that I’ll be featuring you for this week’s hop 🙂 My peanut butter never turns out quite right, so I’m looking forward to trying out some of your tips. Have a great week!

    • Hi Alicia! Thanks for featuring my Homemade Peanut Butter! One time I made the peanut butter and it didn’t turn out right. I added too much oil. I think I’ve got it down to a science now. It’s a regular in my house now.

  11. I’m a total nut for peanut butter and I WILL be doing this. Hopefully sooner rather than later and maybe even run to the store today. Oh, gosh. Thanks so much for sharing!!!

    • Hi Allison! Thanks for featuring my Homemade Peanut Butter. Love this peanut butter. I hope you get to make it. You’re sure to love it. The jar I made is almost gone. I must make a larger batch next time….

  12. Very Cool! I didn’t even know one could make this so easily.

Thanks for linking with Twirl & Take a Bow!

  14. I can’t believe how easy this looks! This is definitely a winner. I must pin! 🙂

  15. Wow!! What a wonderful recipe~ I have never made my own peanut butter before but when I was visiting my daughter in GA, you could grind peanuts and make peanut butter at a few of the local grocery stores~ I need to try this! Thanks for stopping by Four Seasons Blog Hop~Lynn @ Turnips 2 Tangerines

  16. I will have to make this weekend.

  17. When we make this in Sierra Leone we tend to use a morter and pestle, plus a rolling pin. Your way is much easier.

  18. Sharing this 🙂 Who doesn’t need homemade peanut butter?!

  19. IT’S SOOOO simple to make your own!!! 🙂 I always tell my peanut butter addicted friends to do this! And do it with ALL NUTS. I hope they’re taking my advice 😉

  20. Holy cow, I absolutely found this site by accident and I am so glad I did. I to am on a no salt/sodium diet due to Meniere’s disease. I usually buy the Simply Jif which is lower in sodium than the regular but must use it very sparingly. I will be making my own peanut butter from now on, using this recipe.
Can I ask you a dumb question?? Do you buy your peanuts in the grocery store already roasted? I honestly do not know, as I don’t ever buy them.
    Thanks!

    • Hi Desi! So glad you found my blog. I buy the jar of unsalted roasted peanuts from the grocery store. You can find them in places like Walmart also. They are located in the aisles where they sell regular peanuts. Let me know how it turns out….

  21. I need to try this! But with cashews. It would be cheaper than a $10 bottle of cashew butter.

    • Hi Carla! When I was buying the peanuts to make this, the cashier was asking me if I’ve tried it with other nuts. I haven’t. You must let me know how it comes out if you make it with cashews.

  22. Another great pin for my Pinterest board, Sharon! Thanks for sharing.

  23. Love how easy this looks!

  24. I have no idea why I have never made peanut butter before! It looks so easy, I think I will give it a try. 🙂

  25. Looks really easy, I need to make some for my husband. He likes PB a lot but since all the recalls we rarely buy it. This is a smart and easy alternative.

    • Hi Sonya! This is definitely one of the more easier homemade items to make. It seems as though I’m on a mission to make everything homemade….

  26. Hi Sharon. I have yet to make my own peanut butter but it is on my to-do list. I love the simple ingredients and my kids eat a lot of peanut butter. I better make sure there is no junk in it! When I buy natural peanut butters they are often different consistencies. Does yours stay mixed or does it need a stir? I don’t mind stirring. I’m just curious.

    • Hi Christina! The peanut butter stays mixed. I don’t have to stir it at all. It has a really thick texture when it has set for a little while. However, if you add too much oil, it will not be as thick and tend to be more thin. I know this from experience since I have made it many times.
