How to Widen T-Shirt Neckline

How to Widen T-Shirt Neckline

One of the worst things about wearing a t-shirt is how tight the neckline feels.  I usually just cut them off.  I have so many t-shirts with the neck part cut off.  It usually leads to the neckline stretching out too wide over time.  So, today I am doing something a little different.  My goal is to secure the ends of the neckline so that it doesn’t stretch so out of shape.  Plus, I want it to look neater when I wear them.

Directions:

This is a typical t-shirt that has such a tight neckline.  It almost feels like you’re choking when you wear it.

First, cut around edge of ribbed neckline.  (Notice pic at top of post.)

Turn t-shirt on wrong side.  Fold down neckline edge and iron.  This is a very small amount folded down.

You will need to fold down edge again.  This is to secure the edges before sewing.

Turn on right side. Pin if needed to hold fold down.  Then, sew close to the bottom of fold if possible.

Ta-da!  I can breathe so much better with a wider neckline….much cuter than that tight neckline.

I was looking for this and finally found it! Thank you for your tutorial. I just have one question and I really hope you can email me with the answer sinds I need to do it before March 24th, but what stitch so you use for the neckline? It has to be stretchy right but it looks like a straight stitch to me. Hope you can answer me and thank you again, this will help me so much!!

  2. This tutorial is exactly what I was looking for. You used the exact same brand-even the same color-of the t-shirt I just got for my daughter with a custom design so it can’t be returned. The neck is SO SMALL. I’m going to use your instructions this afternoon so that she can wear it comfortably. Thank you!

  7. Hiya, I’m like you and always find t-shirt necklines too tight so decided recently that just cutting them was better than not wearing them at all.

I thought about doing this but thought maybe the fabric would bunch up or something, seeing as you’re folding the neck hold outwards – a tighter circumference outwards to a wider one, if you see what I mean. Does it do this at all? Your sample looks perfection but I don’t know if that’s just luck, a particular skill, stretchy fabric, or whatever else. Thanks in advance!

  8. This is great! My husband is always complaining that his t shirt is choking him.Now I know how to fix it ,thanks
