How to Make and Refill Foam Hand Soap

Foam Hand Soap

For my daughter’s birthday, she bought a foam hand soap at Dollar Tree.  She loves this store.  My child takes after me.  She loves getting the most for her money.  Now, that she has managed to use it up in a month or so, she wanted a new one.  I think that she really just likes the foam effect landing in her hands.  However, all her birthday money is gone.  So, of course after a little bit of research and trial and error, I conquered this task.  FYI:  Try not to make the mix bubble up too much when fixing it because it may cause the spout to clog and not make foam.  Also, don’t overuse too much soap.  Foam is normally a lot of water and little soap.  Now, on to the directions.

Making Foam Hand Soap

This is really pretty easy to make.  All you need is an item that provides some type of soap, such as dishwashing liquid.  Plus, water.  I used Dawn Dishwashing Liquid since I have a lot of it at home.  The combination is easy to mix.  For the size of the container I am using, I used 1 cup of water and 1/4 cup of dishwashing liquid. (I’ve used less than 1/4 cup dishwashing liquid sometimes and it still provides a nice foam.)

I poured in 1 cup of water.  To deter the mix from making too many bubbles when mixing, I used a measuring cup to pour in the 1 cup of water first.

Measure out the amount of dishwashing liquid to use.  I am using 1/4 cup of dishwashing liquid.  Using a funnel, pour the dishwashing liquid into the foam soap container.

Use a drinking straw, or any other straight item, to stir the mix.  Stir slowly.  Try not to make too many bubbles when stirring.  That way, you will not clog the spout.  Too many bubbles forming in the bottle may cause the spout to clog.  I know this from experience since making this mix.  Replace spout top and it’s ready for use.  So, let’s see if mines actually made foam soap.

Make Foam Hand Soap

Yay! It works! Now, I just need to teach my child how to mix this formula!  So, have you made foam hand soap or refilled a foam hand soap container?

  2. We have four children, two in diapers. Immediately my preferably half just conveys two or three diapers, a not many wipes, a one of invalidate baggies and a pacifier exactly in her tote. We stay some additional garments in the raise of the minivan. The entirety else is sauce.

  4. Appreciating the dedication you put into your site and in depth information you offer.
It’s nice to come across a blog every once in a while that isn’t the same out of date rehashed material.
Fantastic read! I’ve bookmarked your site and I’m adding your
RSS feeds to my Google account.

  5. Great recipe! I had been meaning to search for one for a while! Got tired of the wrong combination or watering down what we had to make it stretch!
How big is your container? I have BBW ones that are 8.75 fl ounces. I put in your measurements and the container was full to the top do some spilled over. Hope I won’t have clogging issues. May need to reduce the recipe some? But my girls like how foamy it is! Thanks!

    • Hi Linda! I can’t remember the size now since I have torn off the labels, however, it never overflows. Definitely, reduce the amount if it is too much. I’ve made it so many times that I just eye my measurements, now. So, glad the girls like the foamy soap. It is such a money-saver to make your own foam hand soap….

I will definitely try this. I am paying 20 dollars a gallon for what I am using now.

    • Hi Rickie! This is much, much cheaper. You definitely must try it. Plus, you can always decrease the amount of dish liquid when making…..another way to save.

  7. Wondering if you can use bubble bath for the soap portion? My tub is not usable right now and I have loads of bubble bath bottles.

    • Hi Kristen. I’ve never used bubble bath, but I’m sure that bubble bath will work, too. You just need some type of soapy product. People have used many different of products, such as, shampoo, etc. Try it and let me know how it turns out.

  8. Just did this using the Ivory soap I’ve had in my pantry forever. I’ve been using the foaming soaps and love them, but didn’t know I could use the Ivory!

Found you via the SITSGirls Sharefest! Love your blog – lots of great ideas.

    • Thanks Julie! I love refilling my containers because it is so simple. You can pretty much use any type of soap liquid ingredient to make the refill. Some people use shampoo to refill. It just saves so much money when you make the refill.

  9. Sharon, thanks for sharing your “how to” for all of us. I have added water to my bottles a few times to spread it out. Never thought about making new.

    Thanks again,
    Helen

    • Hi Helen! I didn’t either until recently. It dawned on me that I can refill this and not have to buy any more new bottles of foam soap. Now, we’re set.

I have a kitchen aid roaming soap dispenser instructions that use a 10 parts water to 1 part soap ratio. Too much soap will gum up the dispenser.

    • Hi Sharon! Thanks for the info. So far, my dispensers are doing great. But, I will definitely keep this info in mind as I do not want to mess up my dispenser.

    • So with the no touch dispensers I don’t know about making foam soap but you can refill them will normal soap. Just slide a butter knife under the plastic part and then slowly pull up. It pops off somewhat forcefully so be careful and then just full with your soap and pop back on and return it to the dispenser

  11. I buy the big container of hand soap at Sam’s and then mix it with water into an old big laundry container with the push button spout. Real easy to refill the foam bottles! Mixing it in advance, the bubbles down by the time I need to refill my foamers.

    • Hi Kat! That sounds like a good idea. Definitely sounds like a time-saver, too. I’ll keep that one in mind. My kids could just refill containers when needed.

  12. Ok so I was wondering can you use this in the automatic no touch dispensers ? And the ratio would be 1 cup to how much soap sorry just don’t want to screw it up 🙂

    • Hi Jennifer! Thanks for asking. I went back and updated the amounts in the post. You will use 1 cup water and 1/4 cup of soap. I’m not sure if it can be used in the no touch dispensers. I’ve only tried it in the foaming soap containers. I must say that this is one of my favorite DIY posts because it really saves you money and it’s really quick and simple to make. Let me know how it comes out for you.

  13. I reuse my foaming soap container all the time this way. I usually use a 1:3 ratio. Using whatever shower gel is on sale, or in the “dollar” rack at my grocer. Makes it last a lot longer.

  14. Oh my goodness what a great idea and what great timing. We just ran out of foaming soap in the bathroom.
I found your site on TitiCrafty’s Silly Hop.

  19. Will have to try this!

  20. Hi Sharon!
I have never tried this before. With little kids around you can never seem to have enough hand soap especially the foamy type. I am sure they think it is so cool the way the soap foams up in their hands and the way it feels. I will definitely be trying this one.
    Great post
    Have a wonderful day 🙂
