Easy Way To Turn Regular Pot Holders Into Scented Pot Holders

Easy Way To Turn Regular Pot Holders Into Scented Pot Holders

My favorite spice scent is nutmeg.  I could smell it all day and never get tired of the scent.  It has such a relaxing scent.  Of course, I would look foolish smelling this spice all day.  So, I decided to turn one of my old pot holders into a scented pot holder.  That way, every time I take a hot pot or pan off the stove, I would be able to smell that wonderful scent.  I was in no mood to make a pot holder, so I’m cheating a little and using one that’s already made.  Always looking to save on time….

Items Needed:

  • pot holder
  • rice
  • dry spice  or essential oil
  • potpourri (optional)
  • material (enough to make a satchel to go on inside) – optional

Using a pot holder, trace the shape of the pot holder to make a pouch to hold the rice/potpourri.  Of course, when you sew it, you will want to make it smaller than the pot holder so that it will fit inside.  You may skip this step if you plan to just pour the rice/potpourri inside of the pot holder. (Next time, I think that I will skip making a pouch and just pour the rice/potpourri mix into the pot holder.  I think that it allows the scents to escape quicker without the pouch.)

Cut out and sew up.  Leaving the top open to pour in rice and/or potpourri mix.

To make the scented items, I crushed up some potpourri that I had for about 10 years.  Why was I saving it? Not sure.  Anyway, I put it in a plastic bag and used a hammer to crush it up.  Of course, if rice is all you have, then it will do just as well.

I mixed the potpourri with the rice and mixed in my favorite spice, Nutmeg.  This is a small jar of nutmeg.  I probably used about half of the jar.  The amount to add will depend on how much rice or potpourri you are using.  I had about 1  1/2 of the rice mix.  I will be testing as time goes by whether or not I need to remove the pouch and add more nutmeg if the scent if not strong enough.

Scoop into pouch.  Don’t overfill pouch because you need to keep the pot holder as flat as possible when pouch is inserted.

Using a needle and thread, stitch close the pouch on the inside.  It was easier to stitch it close while on the inside instead of taking it out.

Then, stitch close the top of the pot holder.  All done!

  1. I love nutmeg too! I’d love to have these in all different scents! Thank you for linking at the In and Out of the Kitchen Link Party. Hope to see you again next week.

  2. What a clever idea. I had a book once that suggested a few spots of something like a clove oil but that left a mark, This is a much better idea.

  3. I love this, Sharon! I’m for all things “smelly.” Kitchen spices are my favorite scents. Love how easy it is and can’t wait to whip up a couple. ~Pamela

  4. Great concept! =)
