Though, you can’t see it on this picture, there is a hidden magnet behind the door on this cabinet.  It will help to turn this cabinet into a magnetic holder for recipes when cooking.  I was inspired by a picture I saw online where a lady used a clothes hanger to hold a recipe in place.  Then, my mind started ticking on how to come up with a neat way to be able to hold my recipes in place with a magnet while I’m cooking, but remain hidden when not in use.  I love it!  It’s simple to do, also.

You will use two large magnets (photo of package at end of post).  One will be used to place and remain on inside of cabinet.  The other will be used whenever you want to hold a recipe on cabinet.  I painted the magnets to make them look prettier, plus I didn’t like the feel of them.

I thought it would be so cute to put a little message on them when the red paint dried.  You gotta love…. I’m Stuck On You.  Printed messages on magnets are definitely optional.

I used a large washer on the inside of cabinet.  This will help to hold the magnet since the magnet will stick to the washer. The washer measured about 1  7/8 inches if you measure it across.  You can pretty much use any size since the magnet will stick to it.  I opted to paint it also.  Got carried away.  I did not paint the back side of the washer. I didn’t know if it would interfere with it sticking nicely to the hanging strip.

These picture hanging strips work well for attaching the washer.  I struggled with finding something to attach the washer to my inside cabinet door.  I didn’t want to glue or tape for fear that it may damage the wood.  Of course, these removable strips were perfect.  Plus, if you get tired of having the magnet on the cabinet, you can easily remove it and it won’t hurt the wood.

After following the directions for the hanging strips, attach washer and hold in place for 30 seconds.

Then put magnet on washer.  Be careful. The magnet will be drawn to the washer very quickly.

Now that there is a magnet attached to inside of door, you can just take the second magnet and line it up near the inside magnet to hold a recipe in place when needed.  One strange thing I noticed about using the magnet for holding the recipe, it only wanted to work on one side of the magnet.  I’m not sure what causes that reaction, but it works nonetheless.  When not in use, it’s probably wise to store the second magnet in a place that is not magnetized.  I usually keep the second magnet right in a drawer below the cabinet.  I really like this magnetic recipe holder idea because I don’t have to look down to follow the directions in a recipe.  This keeps my recipe right at eye-sight and no one actually knows it’s there when not in use.  So neat!

  1. This is a great idea that I’ll definitely do in my own kitchen! I also like that it can easily be taken down.

  2. My recipes are currently all scrunched up in a folder. This is a much more creative way of doing it.

  3. excellent idea and DIY! perfect for rentals too since you can take out the tape easily. 🙂 saving for our next kitchen!

    • Hi Roaen! One of the best things about using this is definitely the ability to take it down when you want to move it or you’re moving. It won’t hurt the wood at all.

  4. What a smart idea!
