How To Dye Eggs With A Necktie And Vinegar

Dye Eggs with Neckties and Vinegar

Check out these eggs!!! These are so cute! Getting in my practice for dyeing eggs before the big day.  Easter is on the way!.  I’m on a mission to find the most unique and interesting ways to decorate eggs.  This is my first attempt at coloring eggs using neckties and vinegar.  It just sounded too interesting to pass up.  Let just say, I love the look!  It’s an easy thing to do and my daughter was fascinated with the idea of using neckties, yes neckties.  (Hopefully, my husband won’t be looking for this tie. LOL!)  So grab these ingredients and follow the directions below:

Items Needed:

  • 100% silk neckties (Be frugal and find some in your husband’s closet. If not, buy at a thrift store.  Only use 100% silk or it won’t work. You might want to buy several with different designs to experiment.  I only used one tie to die five eggs. I had to sew a couple of pieces together to make them big enough to wrap around egg.
  • vinegar (1/4 cup)
  • eggs
  • cotton t-shirt (You can use a cotton sheet or pillow slip.)
  • egg carton (Use this to set the eggs to cool when removing from pot.)
  • tongs (Use to remove eggs from boiling water.)
  • rubber bands or tie twists
  • vegetable oil

Directions:

Cut the lining out of the tie.  It’s a pretty simple technique.

Wrap the eggs in the tie pieces.  (Make sure the right-sided material of the tie lies against the egg.) I used rubber bands to tie mines.  It seems to hold better. You can use the tie twists if you have them.

Cover the silk tie covered eggs with the cotton t-shirt pieces.

Place into a stainless steel pot.  Pour in enough water to cover the eggs entirely.  If you have a glass pot, you can also use that.  Though, it might work with any pot.

Pour in 1/4 cup of vinegar. Bring to a boil.  Then, reduce and let it simmer for 20 minutes.

Use tongs to remove from boiling water.

I used an empty egg carton box to hold them until cool.  I’m sure it would be fine if you just placed in a bowl or on a plate.

Remove wrapping and WOW!….This actually works! Rub vegetable oil on egg with a towel to give a shine like the ones at the beginning of this post.

On to my next technique for dyeing eggs.  (First, I have to decide what that technique is gonna be.) Have you tried this one?  Will you try this technique? Check back next week for my next attempt at dyeing eggs. I have a little while before Easter arrives….

  1. These are great. My husband only owns a few neckties, so I think a trip to Goodwill is in order (also a good reason to finally go and drop off those bags of outgrown clothing). I believe that silk scarves will work as well.

    • Thanks Renee! I’m sure that you could use silk scarves, also. I just dropped off a bag of clothing at Goodwill that had been in my car for a month. Gave me a reason to go in and look for something to use on a blog post…

Not only we would be saving money (those at the malls are pretty expensive), but it will be fun too. I can already imagine the colors and their laughs.. Thanks for sharing this with us.
